How to Estimate Landscaping Work

Landscaping estimates combine material costs, labor hours, site conditions, and equipment needs. Unlike indoor trades, landscaping is heavily affected by terrain, soil type, and weather — a patio on flat ground costs half what the same patio costs on a hillside.

Site conditions make or break your profit. Rocky soil doubles digging time. Slopes require retaining solutions. Poor drainage means water management before you even start the actual project. Always walk the site before quoting — photos lie about grade changes.

Material grade swings the price dramatically. A basic paver patio at $12/sqft uses concrete pavers on a compacted gravel base. A premium version at $30/sqft uses natural stone on an engineered base with polymeric sand. Same footprint, completely different price — and completely different perceived value to the homeowner.

Don't forget the hidden costs. Delivery charges ($200–$500 for bulk materials), equipment rental ($200–$600/day for skid steers, augers), dump fees ($150–$400 per load), and irrigation tie-ins. These add 10–20% to your material costs and catch new landscapers off-guard.

Seasonal timing affects both cost and quality. Spring and fall are peak seasons — crews charge more and book out further. Summer heat in Texas means watering costs skyrocket for new plantings. Winter is cheapest but limits what you can plant. Price accordingly and educate your clients on timing.
